Alarm Clock Negotiations

Every night, I set my alarm clock with the confidence of a woman who clearly has absolutely no idea who she will become by morning.

At 10 p.m., I have big plans for the morning. Tomorrow will be different; I’m waking up as a new person! I’m getting up early so I’ll have plenty of time to make and enjoy a nice relaxing cup of warm coffee, get ready without feeling rushed, and maybe even accomplish something before the rest of the world wakes up. I lay down feeling so optimistic for the next morning.

Then that first alarm goes off. Suddenly, I no longer know the woman who made all those elaborate plans for the next morning. Whoever she is, she is clearly off her rocker. The woman that actually wakes up seems to be more in tune with being an educated negotiator.

If I hit snooze once I can still get ready. Ten minutes later: I don’t really have to do my hair today. By my third alarm fifteen minutes later, even breakfast is optional.

Before long, that meticulously thought-out morning routine has been reduced to the absolute bare minimum. Somehow, I’m calculating exactly how many things I can eliminate in exchange for another few minutes of sleep.

By the time I finally make it out the door, Ive broken every promise I made to myself the night before. My carefully planned morning has turned into a morning like most others, longing for the coffee I didn’t have time to make, a questionable hairstyle and the stark realization that I probably should have gotten up with the first alarm. But as I lay down tonight, I’ll do it all over again. I’ll set that early alarm with confidence, fully believing that tomorrow morning will be different. Ill wake up energized and ready to take on the day with a smile on my face. Will it actually happen? Probably not. But hope is a powerful thing—and apparently, so is the snooze button.

Until next time, keep laughing, keep learning and keep it real.
