Every year, somewhere around the end of September, something happens to me. The temperature drops below 80 degrees for approximately three hours and suddenly I am a fall person.
Never mind that Oklahoma could easily be back in the 90’s by lunchtime. That cool morning breeze at 7 a.m. has already done well enough at convincing me it’s time, Individuals sit on main street selling their pumpkins and gourds, new fall coffee is released, and the fall decorations are out and plentiful. I start thinking about fall candles, cute porch decorations and whether I need another blanket for the couch, I suddenly want to make soup even though nobody in my house asked for it—and there is a pretty good chance the weather will have turned back hot while I eat it.
Then there are the new fall clothes.
Fall Miranda has an entire wardrobe planned in her head, Sweaters, boots, jeans, leggings, warm comfy flannels, and cute layered outfits. The problem is Fall Miranda apparently lives somewhere other than Oklahoma, because by 2 p.m. I’m regretting every layer I put on that morning.
That still doesn’t stop me. Something about October makes ordinary things feel better. Coffee tastes better when it’s chilly outside. Sitting on the porch feels different, more peaceful. Even cleaning the house becomes slightly more enjoyable when there’s a fall candle burning on the table and I can pretend I have my life together.
Of course, I’ll also convince myself that this is the year I’m going to do all the fall things. Pumpkin Patch? Absolutely. Baking things from scratch? Obviously. Decorate the whole house? Already got a head start!
Will I accomplish all my fall goals? History says probably not, but that won’t stop me from planning and embracing my new seasonal personality.
So, if you see me wearing boots, drinking a new fall coffee and decorating my porch while the afternoon temperature is pushing 85 degrees, mind your business, it’s October!
Until next time, keep laughing, keep learning and keep it real.
