Abbey Roberts is a candidate for state FFA office and is a member of the Bristow FFA chapter, is a candidate for state FFA office. Running for the office of northeast area vice president, Roberts faces the opportunity of serving more than 29,000 Oklahoma FFA members.

BPS receives potential threat on social media

On Feb. 19, 2023, at approximately 10:45 p.m. the Bristow Police Department was made aware of a threat on social media directed towards the Bristow School System. Officers immediately began working to obtain the source of the threat. The Bristow Police Department along with the Bristow Public Schools continued working on identifying the threat. At around 8:05 a.m. the BPD had located the source of the threat and began speaking with the involved party in an effort to ascertain the validity of the threat. It was determined that there is no danger to students and staff at this time. The BPD will continue to monitor the situation and forward information to the proper agencies.

Lions Club to host breakfast in support of blindness prevention

For as long as this writer’s memory stretches, the Bristow Noon Lions Club has hosted an annual pancake breakfast. The fundraiser helps the club provide eyeglasses for children in need. Recently, the club announced its upcoming breakfast on March 4 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the cafeteria at Edison Elementary School at 9th Avenue and Main Street.

American Legion announces upcoming community events

In recent months, community members may have noticed that Saturday night bingo sessions at the American Legion have been discontinued. Although the Legion terminated its bingo game nights, veterans of the organization have been busily planning bigger and better events the entire community can enjoy.

Stay busy this winter with spring garden planning

Although it’s too early in the season for gardeners to plant any seeds in the ground, the winter months are the perfect time of year for spring and summer garden planning. Taking care of a few tasks before the glory days of gardening begin will help ensure gardeners have ample time to grow their vegetables in the warmer days ahead, said Casey Hentges, Oklahoma State University Extension associate specialist and host of the weekly television show, “Oklahoma Gardening.” “What do you want your garden to look like? Map out your plan by writing it down,” Hentges said.

Bristow OHCE club members, Mrs. Julia Russell and Dr. Joyce Wade Kinslow introduced 'A Place for Herbs' by displaying herbs and reading 'Good Friends are the Spice Our Lives: They Add Flavor To a Day!' Russell began by talking/showing/reading pictures of Mediterranean herbs. Kinslow read/explained/showed how some herbs need sun and some shade. Both Kinslow and Russell showed visualizations. They added/showed how the herbs can be arranged in flowering beds, Russell said that herbs, especially coriander and dill seed, may require very dry and direct sunlight. Russell and Kinslow note that other herbs may need semi-sunlight and some moisture. Both Russell and Kinslow, and also members pointed stressed how some plants need to be kept in pots, to avoid the roots from spreading. Background for presenters Russell and Kinslow include Julia Russell's background as a chef at a private club and a cook for Wal-Mart Corporation. Dr. Joyce Wade Kinslow is a licensed FACS teacher in three states and has been a FACS teacher for middle and high schools. Members received the following handouts: 1)Culinary Herb Garden, 2)Herbal Teas, 3)Oklahoma Gardening. After explaining the culmination set for the information on the 'Chef's guide' handout, a sign -up sheet for the Chefs Guide handout was passed around. President Carolyn Kuykendall will obtain copies via the Creek County Extension.
