A formerly homeless man’s journey from shelters, hotels and cars to housing

Body
D’Metryus Freeman, 27, is no stranger to homelessness. He remembers living for eight months in a hotel in Virginia. As a young adult in Oklahoma City, Freeman said he lived with family in cars, hotels, shelters, and on the street in between periods where he was able to find housing. He moved into an apartment in northeast Oklahoma City in December with the help of the Homeless Alliance and started a job at Curbside Flowers, which provides employment to people transitioning out of homelessness.

Bristow OHCE begin its 2023 year

Body
Bristow OHCE began their new 2023 year with the Leader Training Lesson being 'Storing Food and Food Expiration' presented by Norma Carmen, Vice President for Programs and Leadership Development Chair. Carmen began by saying 'Food storage is kind of like meal planning.' She added 'It would be like having food available for today, next week and an emergency.' Other information that Norma reminded members of was that you can use dented cans, but not bulging or rusty ones, nor use packages that have holes in them. Shoppinghintsinclude picking up meats and fresh vegetables last, make sure refrigerators are below 40 degrees and freezers are zero degrees. Members were also reminded that 'best by' dates on cans does not mean the item has expired. Norma concluded that copies of the handout are available. Connecting with the Leader Lesson, the January roll call question was 'What is the longest expired product you have in your cabinet?'

Stay busy this winter with spring garden planning

Body
Although it’s too early in the season for gardeners to plant any seeds in the ground, the winter months are the perfect time of year for spring and summer garden planning. Taking care of a few tasks before the glory days of gardening begin will help ensure gardeners have ample time to grow their vegetables in the warmer days ahead, said Casey Hentges, Oklahoma State University Extension associate specialist and host of the weekly television show, “Oklahoma Gardening.” “What do you want your garden to look like? Map out your plan by writing it down,” Hentges said.
