America rallies for afterschool programs

(StatePoint) Afterschool programs keep children safe, inspire them to learn, and give working parents the peace of mind that comes with knowing their kids are supervised and learning after the school day ends.There is an urgent need for greater investments in these programs, as U.S. children and youth try to recover academically and socially from the pandemic.

Arctic weather headed toward Bristow

Bristow saw its first dusting of snow Monday morning, so looks as if winter finally made it. Forecasts are reporting arctic air moving into the area on Friday. With a high temperature of 33 and a low of 18. Saturday the temperature will struggle to get to 39 degrees but Saturday night is when the cold arctic air will hit the area with a low of 7 degrees. Sunday will be a frigid day with a high of only 12 and a low of 3 and Monday the high will be 13 with a low of -1 degree. Tuesday sees a little warm up with a high of 24 and a low of 12. During this time,forecasters say the wind chill factors may possibly reach into the 20 area. With temperatures like these, in the arctic range, the best thing to do is stay indoors if at all possible. Bring your pets indoors. Remember, if it is cold to you then it is cold to them also. Do not run electric heaters as you main source of heat and never run an electric heater off an extension cord. Always check on your elderly or home-bound neighbors. Crash involving three teenagers near Depew

On Saturday, Jan. 6, three teenagers were involved in an accident on 231st Street South, three miles north of Depew. A 16 year old juvenile, from Stroud, who was driving a 2001 Dodge pickup, with two passengers, ages 17 and 18 were traveling at an unreasonable speed when the vehicle departed the roadway to the right, striking a tree and rolling a quarter of time onto the passenger side. During the roll the two passengers were thrown from the passenger window, approximately five feet. All three victims were taken to St. Francis, in Tulsa. The 16 year old was treated and released. The 18 year old, Conner Turtle, from Stroud, was admitted in stable condition. The 17 year old was also admitted in stable condition. Seat belts were in use by the driver only.

Turnover, scandals have some rethinking Governor’s power boost

After several scandals and turnover in agency leadership, some Oklahoma lawmakers are rethinking their efforts to give the governor direct appointment power over the largest state agencies. The state’s Progressive-era constitution more than a century ago dispersed executive power across scores of agencies, boards and commissions.

Multi-County Grand Jury indicts three in alleged illegal medical marijuana conspiracy

The Multi-County Grand Jury has indicted three men for a scheme that allegedly enabled non-Oklahomans to illegally obtain commercial licenses for medical marijuana in the state. Prosecutors allege Kevin Paul Pham, 47, and Alex Shiang Lin Chang, 48, paid Richard Gregorio Ignacio, 36, to serve as a “straw owner” for medical marijuana grow operations in Kingfisher County and elsewhere in the state, effectively serving as a front for outofstate individuals.

Bristow Gardening Enthusiasts recently posted an alert to their Facebook page: “Oh, my! Alert Print House & More! The Grinch is stealing their lights!” Holiday amusement ensued. Print House & More owners expressed creativity with their holiday decorations when they chose to place a very grinchy Grinch above their storefront display with a light strand in hand, not-sosubtly attempting to sneak away with them, to the delightfully heroic dismay and concern of community youngsters. Once spotted by a small group of preschoolers and toddlers, the youngsters began to squeal excitedly, demanding action.
