What is my purpose for living?

The twenty-something young man sat in his dingy New York City room. As he looked up, there was the bright red sunrise making a brilliant reflection on his dismal room wall. It made its morning entry upon his empty world everyday.

As he watched this event, a trembling question filled his thoughts: “Why am I here?” No, not in that room, but “Why am I alive? What’s my purpose for living at this time, in this place? What is my reason for being alive today?”

He began to search for an answer. What are you searching for today – a good deal on a new car, a new place to live due to a lost relationship, maybe something as serious as “What is my purpose for living?”

Jesus brings ”life” into the troubled heart and rest for the burdened mind. Jesus said, “Come to me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

Your purpose for living is to honor God, making Jesus your “go-to” answer man. When your brain is saturated with the heavy questions of life, pour it out to Jesus.

Some tell us that God burdens people with “do this, don’t do that” commands so much that he sentences us to grief. Jesus would call this person a thief because he takes from others what they need to know in order to become free from their burdens. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they might have life, and might have it abundantly” ( John 10:10).

Poor choices often become terrible burdens; sin, which is rebellion against God, cannot bring healing, but only brings that “weary and heavy-laden” condition. Jesus tells us all, “If you abide in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” ( John 8:31-32).

Join us this Sunday morning at the Depew Church of Christ and learn more about freedom in Christ, as the young man in New York City did when he searched for meaning for his worthless life and found it in Jesus.
