Fall is Here

This is my favorite season of the year. I love to watch the colors of the leaves change from green to orange and red. The air is cool and people are breaking out their jackets. When you look around you see pumpkins and scarecrows adorning people’s front porch. There are Halloween decorations still up at some houses and Christmas lights already up at others. It is the perfect time of year for hay rides and fires at night that people can sit around enjoying each other’s company. My favorite treats start coming out in the stores such as caramel apples and apple cider. Another favorite of people’s is pumpkin spice, which I am not a fan.

During this wonderful season you have Halloween which is my favorite holiday. Up next comes the best holiday for food, Thanksgiving. Every year it brings back memories of my father. This was his favorite holiday because of all the delicious food my mom would make. There is always the turkey of course, smelling so good and you can’t wait to eat it. I would sneak a piece if I ever got the chance. We also had stuffing, turkey gravy, baked beans, candied sweet potatoes, all made from scratch by my mother. I most looked forward to the desserts that covered the counter at my mom’s house. Mom’s pumpkin pie was the best. My grandma would bring her better than sex cake which she whispered the name because it embarrassed her. Dad would sit in his recliner watching football or something on TV while he ate and visited with the other guys in the living room. Mom never sits down as she makes sure that everyone else has food before she even thinks to make her a plate. Everyone enjoys visiting with family while the children play in the spare room or venture outside to play if it is not too cold.

It is the one holiday that I can catch up on the family news with all my nephews and nieces. My sisters laugh and joke at the table while trying each other’s food they brought. We always wait to see the reactions so we know if it is something we can make again or if it bombed.

We don’t get to see each other much but I know that any time I need my mom or my two sisters, they would be right there for me. Although my dad is not with us anymore and times are changing, I know that those memories will go on forever. Remember to capture these memories this holiday season and also remember to give thanks. There is a lot to be grateful for when you sit down and think about it. Take pictures, lots of pictures, even though it may annoy some people. You never know when those pictures are the only thing you have left of that person in your life. Stay safe this holiday season and enjoy all the delicious food with family and friends.
