Joseph 'Dwayne' Scott was born in Muskogee, on Sept. 7, 1957 to Nelda Marie and Joseph Durwood ( J.D.) Scott and lived his entire life in Oklahoma; graduating from Jenks High School in 1975. In his wild twenties Dwayne delivered pool tables, worked in a state hospital for the developmentally disabled, built a home from the ground up in Norman, and rode his motorcycle with passion, before finally driving trucks long-haul to raise the funds to put himself through school at Oklahoma State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education in 1990. He spent his thirties teaching mathematics both at Sequoyah Middle School-where he received the Teacher of the Year award in 1995-- 1996 and then at Bristow High School. At both institutions he was respected and admired by faculty and students alike. In his forties Dwayne joined his father on the family's pecan orchards in central Oklahoma. He spent the rest of his working years in those orchards, cultivating the trees he loved. A distinguished pecan grower, he served on the Board of Directors for the Oklahoma Pecan Growers Association, was recognized as Grower of the Year in 2015, and his orchards were recognized as Grove of the Year in 2018. He loved nature and spent his final summer on this blue marble watching whales in the Pacific and convening with the coastal redwoods in northern California. Dwayne was respected and loved by those who knew him well. We will miss him.
