John Ray Dunigan was born Feb. 9, 1946, to Clarence and Ada Bell Dunigan in Cove, Arkansas. He departed this life May 21, 2022, at the age of 76 years, three months and 12 days.

John went to work at a young age, making his own way and creating in himself a work ethic that carried him throughout his life. John met the love of his life, Betty Hackney, the day she caught his eye while at Margie’s house in Oklahoma City. They were united in marriage on Oct. 6, 1966 in Bethany, Oklahoma. Together, John and Betty raised their children with unwavering love; teaching life’s lessons along the way. John supported his family in many ways. He was mechanically minded, leading him to begin a business with salvage yards. Being a collector of antiques gave way to owning an antique shop. He loved to work with his hands which led him to carpentry and wood carving. Being self-employed, he found himself a handy man from time to time. There wasn’t much around the house he couldn’t do. John, a storyteller at heart, loved visiting with those in and around the community. Time with family always brought a smile and laughter. An afternoon with grandkids brought back his youthfulness no matter their age in the moment.

John is survived by his wife of nearly 56 years, Betty, of the Bristow home; four children, Tina Hulsey, of Bristow, Max Dunigan and Pam Davidson, of Bristow, April Lewis and husband Kyle, of Hodgen, Oklahoma and Billie Luman and husband Michael, of Hodgen, Oklahoma; three siblings, Jimmy Dunigan, of Heavener, Oklahoma, Ruthie Churchwell, of Bowlegs, Oklahoma and Wanda Robinson, of Howe, Oklahoma; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Margie Tolleson and Nita May Churchwell; as well as one brother, Troy Jean Dunigan.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Thursday, May 26, 2022 at Hutchins-Maples Matherly Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Bristow City Cemetery.
