Fire Chief Charles Conklin was at the Fire House with some of his fellow fighters when I went to talk with him about 9-11.It's been 25 years since our lives were shocked by those falling Twin Towers.
Yes, he was at the station that day. They all watched the plane hit the tower and knew New York fire fighters would be heading to the scene. The Bristow firefighters then put up a big American flag and small flags around town.
He then went on to say 9-11 is the reason he chose this day, Sept. 11, 2026, to retire from 35 years of service with the Bristow Fire Department.
What a special day it was to learn he had made that decision and why. As Sabrina Mounce, Bristow city clerk, who has worked at city hall for 31 years saidabout Chief Conklin, and I'm sure many Bristownians wouldagree, 'He'sgreat. He's there when you need him. He's always there.'
A retirment reception was held for the chief. Congratulatione on a 35 year career and best wishes on you retirement.
