Because of the severe drought that most of Oklahoma has been experiencing, Creek County Commissioners have approved placing a burn ban for all of Creek County.
Even with a small fire that you feel you have control over is a potential hazard in these weather conditions. Fires spread so quickly and dry, windy conditions are only fuels for the fire.
Creek County has 15 fire departments, of which 11 are volunteer based. Some of the volunteers may have a 40 mile drive to get to you if a fire was to break out. Is it worth it?
According to weather reports, the dry spell isn’t going anywhere for awhile, so the commissioners decided it was in the best interest of the county to put a burn ban in place for two weeks, then revisit to see if an extention is needed.
Anyone who is caught breaking the ban could face up to a $1,000 fine and up to a year in jail.
