Actress Betty White passed away Dec. 31, 2022, only a few days before her 100th birthday. White was well known for her charitable work involving animals and her animal rights advocacy. The #BettyWhiteChallenge went viral after being created to honor the actress and continue her work caring for animals. On Jan. 17, which would have been White's 100th birthday, the hashtag challenged people to donate to a local or national rescue shelter.
Fans all over took on the challenge, donating to an animal shelter of their choice. The social media driven challenge encouraged donors to contribute a $5 donation. In less than a week and several donations later, a total of $22,000 was raised in honor of the late actress.
Bristow's Barnyard Rescue, owned and operated by local resident Beth Roberts, received a donation of $1,099, including items such as dog food, collars, toys, pads, treats and mcuh needed items that help with the care of the animals at the rescue.
Sherry Ortiz, employee at the Cushing Dollar Tree, wanted to help so on Monday, Jan. 17, she asked patrons if they wanted to donate some type of pet supply at the store. She and her coworkers collected a huge box of pet items which was donated to Barnyard Rescue. Ortiz is challenging the Bristow and Sapulpa Dollar Tree stores to do the same thing.
