Who’s Your Accuser?

Have you ever been blamed for doing something harmful or accused of saying words that were offensive; or were you accused of conspiring against another to violate their rights? Yes, each of these accusations is enough to damage, even destroy, your credibility. But, once the evidence is presented and witnesses secured, you were found “Not Guilty!

A young high school student was nearly arrested, expelled from school, and placed in Juvenile Detention because of an accusation by a group of false witnesses.

There was a trio of antagonizers who relentlessly proclaimed their disdain for a small group of Goth students. These Goth students were doing nothing negative for attention. They merely chose to express themselves with clothes and hairstyles of the Goth community.

One day a young man in the Goth group, fed up with the abuse, turned and insulted the most vocal member of the critical trio. She vowed revenge.

A few days later the Goth teen found himself facing an angry mob. The girl he had insulted was leading a group of male athletes. She accused the boy of punching her in the face, causing a gash above her eye. School officials notified police of the alleged assault. When the boy explained that he didn’t hit the girl and that the other two girls in that trio were the only “witnesses,” a police woman made a plan to pry out the truth.

The officer arranged to speak before the entire student body at an assembly. She explained to the students that the accusation against the boy is gravely serious. “It can ruin his life.” She then called for each “witness” to join her on stage. No one approached!

There was one real witness. She had observed the accuser with the bloodied eye persuading her boyfriend to hit her in the face until she bled. The witness saw and heard the plot.

Similarly, King David in the Bible had many enemies. He wrote about them in the Psalms.

In Psalm 59 David calls out to God, “Oh my God, deliver me from my enemies. Protect me from those who rise up against me…Look, they are waiting to take my life! Cruel men have banded themselves together to oppose me. But I didn’t do anything wrong to them or cross them, Oh Yahweh. Wake up to help me and see what’s happening!…They sin by what they say… They curse and they tell lies. So, let their own pride trap them.” (Psalms59:1-4, 12) Notice how David put it all in God’s hands and trusted Him to deal with his accusers. Who’s your accuser? Can you do as David by trusting in the Lord?
