Where Is God When Life Hurts?

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).

Have you hurt inside so badly that you can’t pray? You try, but the pain is too deep for words. The Spirit “helps our weakness; for we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words” (Romans 8:26).

Painful times come into our lives in this world. They come during the death of a child or spouse, and during a terminal illness or divorce. If you know the experience of facing any one of these, then you know and understand deep sorrow. The Psalmists, including King David, knew the depth of pain - “My soul weeps because of grief; strengthen me according to Your word” (Psalm 119:28). In an attempt to reduce your own sorrows, you may have turned to alcohol, started smoking, or binged on comfort food. You’ve sought an artificial and temporary fix, but have you looked toward God? Human experience indicates these short, self-medicating solutions will only compound your pain.

The only absolute remedy is the Lord Jesus! “I shall run the way of Your commandments, for You will enlarge my heart. Teach me the way…Lord, and I shall comply with it to the end. Give me understanding, so that I may comply with Your Law and keep it with all my heart. Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, for I delight in it” (Psalm 119:3235).

You are a victim of mortality! Your earth-bound body is only temporary! At death you will either enter eternal peace with the Lord in heaven, or eternity away from the presence of God. This is the hell that you fear! “I know, Lord, that Your judgments are righteous, and that You have afflicted me in faithfulness” (Psalm 119:75).

“I am weary with my sighing; every night I make my bed swim, I flood my couch with my tears. My eye has wasted away with grief… for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping. The Lord has heard my pleading, the Lord receives my prayer…” (Psalm 6:4, 6-10). “The Lord has heard my prayer!”

You don’t have to face pain after a life of hurting, loss, and heartache. Trust in Jesus!

“Revive me through Your righteousness” (Psalm 119: 40).

“This is my comfort in my misery, that Your word has revived me” (Psalm 119: 50).

The Lord knows when you suffer. He reminds you in His Word that it’s temporary. Read God’s message to you the Bible!
