The Montfort & Allie B. Jones Bristow Public Library is happy to announce its first annual Crowns Tea. The all-ages event occurs Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Bristow Public Library.

Based on the book Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats by Michael Cunningham, the event includes a presentation and open discussion from OKC-based Thick Descriptions.

The event is funded by the Oklahoma Humanities Council. Refreshments will be served.

Hats, of any and all kinds, are strongly encouraged. Business-casual or formal attire is appreciated as well.

“I am really excited about the event, especially since Thick Descriptions has a real knack for looking past labels and breaking down barriers,” said Heather D. Hutto, executive director. “It’s one thing to say ‘I’m a doctor from Oklahoma and I’m wearing an OSU ballcap’, but it's something altogether different to say: ‘I’m an ER doctor raised on a ranch in rural Oklahoma, am a third-generation Lebanese-American, and the first person in my family to go to OSU. That is why I wear this ballcap,’ those sorts of details really broaden our understandings of our culture, and each other,” explained Hutto.

The event is free, but registration is required. Check out the library’s Facebook page, call, or go online to register for the event. For more information about the Crowns Tea or registration, contact the library at (918) 367-6562.
