When she was only five years old, Sandy contracted polio, which necessitated braces for her legs-just like Forrest Gump! But, unlike Forrest Gump, Sandy did not become a runner; she became a nurse when she grew up.

Sandy was caring for an elderly woman named Mable who had been in the hospital and was now being discharged to return to her home. Sandy’s visits were to be once a week, but she occasionally stopped by to see Mable on her way home just to read a little to her, or sing a song for her. Mable enjoyed those visits immensely.

As Mable recovered and Sandy’s medical follow-up visits were no longer needed, Mable asked, “What made you want to be a nurse?”

Sandy replied, “As a child, I had polio and had to miss school. My best friend Virginia brought my lessons to me so I would not fall behind. Some days I was so sick that Virginia just sat and read to me, or sometimes she would sing to me. I appreciated that so much, that I wanted to do things like that for others when I became an adult.” And, with a smile she said, “So here I am.”

After Mable and Sandy said good-bye that evening, Mable said a silent prayer that God would bless Sandy and all medical personnel everywhere.

Discussion: Have you considered what you want to do with your life? Have you made decisions based on how other people have affected you, or cared for you?
