A group of local thespians are bringing the classic Broadway smash, Oklahoma! to Bristow with a unique twist. The production, which has two showings scheduled for July 22 at 6 p.m. and July 23 at 10 a.m., will be staged outdoors in the park at the Klingensmith Amphitheatre.

The first musical written by legendary duo, Rogers and Hammerstein, “Oklahoma” tells the quintessentially American tale of optimistic cowboy, Curly McClain, as he navigates a changing frontier society and attempts to win the love of local farmer, Laurey Williams. The show ran for over 2,000 showings and won dozens of Tony Awards.

“Upon its release, this story helped Americans find joy during a time of great strife after the Great Depression,” says Assistant Director and Bristow Schools alumna, Autumn Manus. “…and I believe it is just as capable of doing so now in this time of strife we are living through.”

While the cast is excited for the possibilities it presents, being outdoors certainly poses its challenges for these dedicated performers.

“The heat is, of course, an issue, but we plan on selling cold refreshments and providing fans for people, as well as scheduling our show times outside of the peak heat,” says Choreographer, Allison Bush. “Having grown up watching the Discoveryland performances, I am thrilled to get to incorporate the environment in ways we wouldn’t be able to indoors.”

Tickets are available on site for $10 and various refreshments will be available for purchase starting 30 minutes before showtime.
