Bristow OHCE November meeting

Wearing masks and using distance seating, the Bristow OHCE club met on Nov. 11, 2020, at Trinity Baptist Church. The devotional, presented by Ray Kinslow, included passing out “Thanks-Living Jar” signs and “Five Kernels: Meaning of Thanksgiving.” With it being Veterans Day, President, Dr. Joyce Kinslow, showed papers on two World War 2 heroes: Hershel “Woody” Williams and J. M. Cross was only 21 years old when the USS Bush sank in 1945. Cross’s parents, Hubert and Ella Cross, are buried in the Bristow City Cemetery. J. M. was their only living child.

Megan Biswell, this past month’s recipient, brought the “Friendship Plate.” She passed it and gifts on to Janet Byrd. Past recipients include Carolyn K., Jane C., Bristol F., etc. “Being a Caregiver” Extension Leader lesson

“Being a Caregiver” Extension Leader lesson was co-presented by Dr. Joyce and Ray Kinslow. This provided information about agencies and services. It described situations and being aware of and ways for avoiding scams. Handouts were given to members. To introduce the Extension Leader lesson,

To introduce the Extension Leader lesson, “Art in Everyday Life,” members answered role call by saying what type of art they enjoy. Dr. Kinslow presented this lesson by quoting famous persons’ opinions about art, i.e. Picasso. She explained that art is important in child development, older adults, and emotional/social development for all.

Dr. Kinslow described LEA literacy, as art sentence structure. Examples of both modern and traditional art was examined by members. She shared artwork by her grandson, Michael Levi Gibbons, who received a state art award when he was in the third grade.

Other Bristow OHCE business included announcement of commit, report on quilt show, and continuance of collecting recipes for the future cookbook. Discussion of the District Planning Meeting (Dec. 7, 2020) included Janet saying she will attend. (The OHCE District Meeting will be next March and includes Creek County).

Future plans include Family Life/Youth chair, Megan Biswell, bringing two Angel Tree names from Christmas list to our December meeting. We will also “adopt a grandparent” by giving a gift to someone recuperating from surgery.

Following the meeting, two Thanksgiving craft projects, a potpourri “pie” and a fall leaf magnet, were shown. Members choose projects and materials needed. Next meeting is Dec. 16, and will focus on crafts. The public is invited
