Bristow OHCE members, Julia Russell and Dr. Joyce Kinslow, introduced *Dealing With Stress"

Leader Training Lesson by passing out a general definition of stress and Julia adding that stress is part of life, and it takes a toll on persons. Russell added that relieving stress includes 1) knowing that one size of relief does not fit all, 2) what works at home may not work on the job, and 3) one cannot control all circumstances, but can control one's response. Russell suggested one needs to have a variety of "to-do" tools. Kinslow provided a list of short term strategies that can often be performed anywhere, takes little practice, are free, and provide immediate relief. Kinslow's examples are:: 1) guided imagery, 2) mediation, 3) progressive muscle relaxation, 4) focused breathing and 5) taking a walk.

Kinslow added that fast acting strategies, such as giving a hug, aromatherapy, and creative artwork can be helpful. Kinslow also listed long term strategies, such as: 1) balanced diet, 2) leisure activities, 3) positive self-talk, 4) yoga, 5) expressing gratitude, and 6) exercise. Russell explained how problem focused coping involves taking steps to remove the stressors and reassess "to-do" lists. Russell suggested obtaining social support, having a pet, and/or cutting out things that add stress. Handouts and discussion included reducing and coping with stress and specific useful activities for stress.

The conclusion of the leader lesson was Bristow OHCE President, Carolyn Kuykendall (who leads a weekly group in Tai Chi) demonstrating movements of Tai Chi, as an example of relieving stress. Kuykendall led members in the Tai Chi examples. activity. Thus, within the "Dealing With Stress" OHCE leader lesson, members participation was saying what they did to relieve stress, practicing a Tai Chi movement, and information to take home and review.

Julia Russell's background includes working in a facility with children who had disabilities, being a chef at a private club, and a cook at Walmart. Dr. Joyce Kinslow has worked as an Art & Play Therapist, Vocational Development Counselor, and a licensed teacher in three states.

Other features of the May Bristow OHCE meeting included the devotional of "Healing for the Whole World" and Mother's Day Prayer by Ray Kinslow. Sheryl Cortez and Julia Russell shared household hints, i.e. Remember that pecan pies will not set during rain and the importance of cleaning out the heating unit of the clothes dryer. Old business included continued plans for their county, Creek County Fair booth, and items for their theme. For more information on Bristow OHCE, contact President Carolyn Kuykendall at 918-605-5410.
