As holidays arrive, families and friends often find themselves sad and missing loved ones taken from life too soon; however, members of the American Legion take the opportunity to remember and honor veterans and military servicemen and women who have perished.

Last Tuesday, December 14, members of the American Legion laid wreaths on the graves of all known deceased individuals who courageously and selflessly served their country in life. They sacrificed themselves for the good of all of us. For that reason, two of those who laid wreaths, both Legion officers, choose to honor those who lie in rest at every opportunity, especially for the holidays.

American Legion Commander Justin Adair expressed his desire to honor vets, saying “When I was in the Air Force, I served doing support. I was told that for each person standing out there, fighting on the front lines, seven support people are needed to provide food, ammunition, weapons, and other supplies, so I supported them. Now, I need to continue my service to all of the fallen veterans who are out here because without them, I wouldn’t have any reason to be here. They gave us our freedom and our lives.”

American Legion Adjutant Robert Mason described his passion for continuing to serve fellow veterans similarly: “When I came back from Vietnam, I served as a personnel specialist, and I worked to try to help all the guys. I’m still trying to do that now. These people need to be responded to as they’re still a part of our heritage. These times of the year, it’s hard.

People don’t want to think about that, but these veterans deserve to have a Christmas that they’re remembered. It’s not just about Memorial Day but Christmas is a time to remember them also. They gave their lives just so we can enjoy the freedoms that we have.”

In addition to laying the wreaths this Christmas, the American Legion purchased turkeys and food items to gift food baskets to veterans and their families this Christmas in partnership with the Milfay Fire Department. The Sons of the American Legion also purchased enough turkeys and food to match the number of food baskets being gifted. In total, 22 veterans and their families received the Christmas food baskets. Moreover, the Legion Auxiliary purchased and donated pajamas, socks, and hygiene items for donation to Bristow and Drumright nursing home residents. Finally, the Legion family purchased gifts for Army veteran John Harris’ family this Christmas, filling the back of his vehicle in support of their comrade.

The American Legion encourages all members of the community to serve and honor veterans, learn about their service and needs, and visit the cemetery, taking a moment to reflect on how American lives and freedoms are built and ensured by the sacrifices and dedicated service of all those who served.
