The Bristow Public Library is happy to announce the arrival of its ARPA-funded children’s furniture and opening of the Woodland Forest Room-- a reading and play room for kids.

“Having a room specifically for our youngest patrons inspires and encourages early literacy skills and a love for learning,” Executive Director Heather Hutto said. “We named it the Woodland Forest Room in honor of Bristow’s historic name, The Woodland Queen,” she continued.

The purchase of the children's sectional sofa and ottoman was made available through ARPA funds in fall of 2021. Due to supply chain issues, the furniture arrived mid August of this year. A custom 3D forest wall mural is being installed behind the new children’s sofa.

Hutto said, “The furniture is high-quality vinyl so it can be sanitized easily, and the 3D forest mural is being installed directly behind it. Board books, early literacy toys and games will also be shelved in the room.”

In addition to the new furniture, a local charitable trust, Bristow Library Board, Inc. provided funds to purchase a new circulation desk in the Children’s wing of the library.

During rennovations in fall of 2021, a shelving overhaul helped create a more accessible atmosphere for kids.

“During our lighting renovations last fall, we swapped the locations of all of our children’s and adult fiction collections, and ordered a children’s circulation desk. The result is a separate wing of the library that is distinctly for kids,” Hutto said.

“I think it is a great place for kids to feel like they belong in the library. It gives them opportunities to practice skills, be creative, and expand their minds,” said Children's Specialist Elsie George. The children’s wing also features chalkboardpainted bookshelves, a homework desk, and a mini-makerspace for teens and youth.

“I think these changes give them a space to be kids,” said Y outh & Teen Specialist Justice Sweger.

The mural is being installed August 31st through September 6th. The Woodland Forest Kids Room is set to open September 7th.
