Who Is Jesus?

Not long ago Jesus was labeled “a myth” and said that “he never existed” in Jewish religious books. He was labeled “a fraud” or spoken of as a man whose claims are unproven, at best. However, many minds have been convinced that Jesus of Nazareth was a real person in history. Please consider the following thoughts.

At the close of John's gospel, he makes a series of statements which reveal himself to be an eyewitness: “Jesus showed many other proofs in front of His followers, but those are not written in this book. These proofs have been written, so that you, the readers, might believe this: Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. If you believe this, you will have eternal life by his name” ( John 20:30-31).

John, a very close follower of Jesus, wrote these words for us within about thirty years of Jesus’ crucifixion. That means that any adult who was there the day Jesus died on the cross would easily recall what they heard and saw. They, too, were eyewitnesses!

When Jesus was dying on the cross “there was no sun!” (Luke 23:44-45) You may remember an eclipse of the sun a few years ago. At its peak, the atmosphere was like a dirty yellow. What Luke describes is a total darkness which surrounded all the people. One skeptic wrote that this was merely an eclipse and that Jesus' life likely ended on the cross in A.D. 33, at the Jewish Passover.

This event occured in Jerusalem during Governor Pontius Pilate's rule. He was in power A.D. 26-36. Tiberius was the Roman Emporor (Luke 3:1). Each of these historic Roman rulers are real people who lived and were in power at a particular time and in specific places. It is all verifiable!

The apostle Paul wrote “Christ is the image of God, who cannot be seen. Christ is superior to all creation because, in Christ, all things were created; everything in the heavenly world and everything on earth, things which can be seen and things which cannot be seen thrones, lords, rulers, or powers. God used the blood of the cross to make peace with everything on earth and everything in the heavenly world.” (Read Colossians 1: 15- 20).

The death of Jesus occurred in a real place during a real time in history, and when actual historic people lived and were named. All this is in the historical record, the Bible.

All of this points to the Person of Jesus being your Savior! Only He can take away your sins!
