Who Was “The Meanest Man In Texas?

His life was one of loss and poverty. These difficulties may have pushed his life along to make cruelty easier. There were other, more direct possible causes. He saw hypocrisy in his divorced father, who was a preacher. He also had “friends” who quickly blamed him for the wrongs they committed.

When his first murder became known, his guilt became too much to bear alone. He was only a teenage young man! His accomplices put him up to being there. Due to the brutal attack, the law quickly came calling. His life was never the same, but God made the difference.

Clyde Thompson was a tough man. His heart was destroyed by those around him who didn’t care. His life in prison was a series of vicious attacks. The other prisoners were quick to point a finger at Clyde for their misdeeds and rule violations. Their assaults on Clyde made him impervious to pain. They wanted to prove who was the toughest. What could he do but wait? Wait for the right moment when he would confirm who’s toughest!

And wait he did. The courts sentenced him to three consecutive life terms! His young life was thrown away with no chance for change until God came into his life!

Jesus said He “came to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10). Clyde was a good candidate for Jesus’ saving grace. Grace is receiving what you don’t deserve. Mercy is not receiving what you deserve. Clyde deserved nothing good!

Your life right now may seem hopeless. You may be feeling helpless. You know that your burden is too heavy to bear alone. You might wonder what can be done to relieve the weight of your sins.
