What Good Is the Old Testament?

Most people gain some knowledge through the instruction of older, experienced, more mature people. For example, some who are reading this article received Bible instruction from a grandmother, some from a godly grandfather, or perhaps from a loving parent. How did you learn about God?

Before there were New Testament Scriptures, people only had the Old Testament Scriptures. For generations many came to know God through them. Jesus learned His Jewish heritage through The Old Testament (O.T.).

Paul once said that the Law convicted him of his sins, that Law “was added because of transgressions” (Galatians 3:19).

He goes on to say: “Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, that we may be justified by faith” (read Galatians 3:23-29). This word “tutor” in the text means “one who brings another to knowledge.” Today we would liken this person to a school bus driver.

Paul also wrote regarding the O.T. Scriptures, saying, “For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope” (Romans 15:4).

What we read about in the O.T. Scriptures helps us see beyond today. These passages give us hope to keep going, keep trusting God: don’t ever stop believing in God for help!

If you are depressed, maybe contemplating taking your own life, consider reading some O.T. accounts of how God worked in the lives of the people. Some had it pretty rough. Right now you cannot see the good in your future, but if you trust God, He will bring good into your life.

God brought the Israelites up from 400 years of slavery in Egypt; they were guided by God and His chosen leader, Moses. However, not all those who journeyed from Egypt were able to enter God’s rest due to their lack of obedience and trust in Him. Everyone over the age of twenty who grumbled did not enter the bountiful land which God promised to give their ancestors (Numbers 14: 22-24; 26-45).

But notice that some did enter the land. Why did God allow these Israelites to experience His promises? Simple! Because they trusted God in all things in their lives, and it was manifested by their obedience. Their faith in Him was rewarded.

You, too, can know the rewards which He has for those who trust Him. Won’t you turn to Jesus today?
