What Are the Chances?

Some of the most wellknown celebrities grew up in poverty. J.K. Rowling had lived in a car with her daughter, but Harry Potter has made her a multi-millionaire. Bill Cosby lived in the South Philadelphia slums with his mother and siblings. Yet, his talents brought him fame and fortune.

Many of the early 20thcentury entertainers grew up in the Jewish ghetto of New York City: George Burns, the Marx Brothers, Jackie Gleason, Fanny Brice, Jimmy Durante, and others. Bob Hope and Jack Benny didn’t have ‘privileged’ lives either.

Each of these once-famous people worked toward life. They felt the weight of their miserable lives. Ambition to attain a better life broke the chain of abject poverty.

The plague of generational poverty still exists. It can hold a family under the weight of utter despair. Generational poverty happens when the parental figure becomes dependent upon the generosity of others due to his or her laziness or lack of education. They let the government support their family.

Sinful living can also create this societal destruction. That lifestyle is then passed on to subsequent generations. However, the chain of generational poverty can be broken.

Situational poverty can be the result of an injury, an illness, or any number of unforeseen circumstances. During the pandemic of 2020 the government shut down many businesses and hard-working people became unemployed.

We witnessed deep economic loss, and many businesses never recovered. Great numbers of people began wallowing in situational poverty while some ambitious folks sought other income sources.

In the Bible, we read that King David sinned with Uriah’s wife, Bathsheba. The prophet Nathan brought King David an unpleasant prophecy: because such terrible sins were committed in Israel, God promised the king that troubles would forever plague his family (2 Samuel 12:9-12).

He entered into generational consequences due to his sins. David’s son, Absalom, was such a great grief for King David that the king fled from his palace. God stated in Deuteronomy 5:9-12 that generational consequences do exist. If parents don’t keep the commandments of God, what are the chances their children will come to know Him?

Life can get better if you’re willing to make better choices for your life! You can break the chain of generational consequences! Honor God!

Please read about God in your own Bible. Jesus said, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. The only way anyone can come to the Father is through me” ( John 14:6). Are you willing to break the chain of generational sin and consequences? Jesus is the only Way!
