The wind was blowing harder, but Mr. Goodpasture had a;ready built a bonfire to burn the limbs that he had trimmed from the trees in the park where he worked. He checked over everything once again to make sure there was plenty of dirt surrounding the bonfire, then he went to the store to get a bottle of water.

Richard was watching the fire and was wishing he had marshmallows to roast over it when he heard sounds of something crying. He looked at the pile of burning wood and his heart sank as he saw three baby kittens trapped in the burning wood. With no hesitation, he pulled his new sweater off, tossed it away from the fire, and ran into the fire to rescue the kittens. He took them to a tree trunk farther away and returned to retrieve his sweater. Then he saw that an ember had burned a hole in his new sweater. He was quite upset, he told his father what had happened and showed him the burnt sweater.

Richard's father looked at him and said,'Son, you took responsibility for other lives in spite of the cost. You showed self sacrifice, which is what makes a hero. I am proud of you.'

Discussion: Is a hero a superperson or can a hero be an ordinary person doing something extrordinary?
