Major changes are coming for Oklahoma's turnpike systems as stopping to pay a toll will be a thing of the past.
Over the next few years, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authoirty will be converting all Oklahoma Turnpikes into cashless terminals. The change over will begin on July 25, 2021, with conversion of the John Kilpatrick Turnpike, and the Bailey and Creek Turnpikes will be next in line and converting all the remaining turnpikes over the next four years.
Collecting cash is the old way of collecting money on turnpike systems. Instead, toll booths will use overhead cameras to take a picture of the vehicles license plate and the registered owner will receive a bill in the mail for the toll fees.
The luxury of not stopping at the tolls booths, however, will pave the way for hight plate rates compared to what drivers are now paying. According to the turnpike authority, the increased toll rates will offset the cost of mailing invoices and processing license plate pictures.
All toll booth employees will be offered employment in other rolls within the turnpike authority.
