House Bill 3621, which would eliminate the 4.5% state sales tax on groceries, was introduced by Oklahoma House Minority Leader Emily Virgin. The bill unanimously passed the House Appropriation and Budget Subcommittee on Finance, last Wednesday. Before being approved, the bill will have to go though the same process in the State Senate. Governor Stitt referenced this proposal in his State of the State address. If passed, the bill would be reduced in phases, three percent starting July 1, 2022, one and half percent starting July 1, 2023 and full exemption from state sales tax July 1, 2024. While the bill would cut state tax, it would not affect the county or city portion of the tax. Oklahoma is one of only 13 states that charges sales tax on groceries
