In 1925 the newspaper had a contest to name our high school football team. There were 31 entries. Some names submitted were Bristow Bronchos, Bristow Bees, Hafer's Hornets, and others. The football editor turned the list over to the director of Bristow high athletics, who in turn, called a meeting of his football men. Twenty-five were present. The names were all put on a blackboard and the act of judging began. After the vote was taken, Monk McGehee's entry was selected - BRISTOW PURPLE PIRATES!
