The annual VFW Quilt Raffle and Ice Cream Social, held over Labor Day weekend, once again brought neighbors and friends together for a good cause. This year’s quilt raffle had a lucky winner with a fun story behind it. Ralph Gray spotted the raffle booth outside Williams Grocery, bought $40 worth of tickets, and sure enough—his name was drawn. He proudly took home the handmade quilt.
The quilt itself carries a special story. It was originally found with only part of it pieced together. Thanks to Virginia Ray of the VFW Auxiliary, who carefully completed the sewing and had it quilted by long-arm, it was ready just in time for the raffle. This tradition continues each year, so be on the lookout next Labor Day for another chance to win a one-ofa- kind quilt. The Ice Cream Social also welcomed a unique visitor Mark O’Donnel, a veteran and long-distance cyclist from Alexandria, Virginia. O’Donnel is biking cross-country from Bethany Beach, Delaware, to the Santa Monica Pier in California. Along his journey, he stops at VFW posts to camp, share stories, and connect with fellow veterans. He was thrilled to see his infantry emblem on the wall of the Bristow post and enjoyed swapping stories with local members before continuing his trek.
The VFW continues to serve veterans and the community, but their efforts depend on local support. Whether through raffle tickets, attending events, or volunteering time, every bit of help makes a difference.
