Bristow Public Schools is honored to announce that its track will now be named “Hilburn Track” in honor of BHS beloved track coach, Shannon Hilburn.
Shannon served as the Head Track Coach for the Bristow Pirates from 2007 until his passing in 2023 after a hard fought battle with cancer that took him far too soon. In his tenure as Bristow’s head track coach, the boys’ and girls’ programs achieved historic success. The boys’ team won state titles in 2013, 2018, and 2019. They also finished as state runner-ups in 2012 and 2017. Our girls’ program was the state runner-up in 2023. The boys’ program also won regional titles in 2011, 12, 13, 17, 18, and 19. Our girls’ program won four straight regional titles with wins in 2021, 22, 23, and 24. Combined, the boys’ and girls’ teams won seven consecutive regional title under his leadership. In 2020, COVID stopped us from competing in spring sports. That year, the boys’ team was projected to, at worst, finish state runner-up and quite possibly win their third straight team title. Seventeen athletes achieved All-State under his leadership. In 2018, Shannon was named the OCA Track Coach of the year and the Tulsa World Track Coach of the Year.
Shannon also served as a remarkable math teacher and mentor to the students. He excelled in the classroom and volunteered for the school by announcing games and in his church in various leadership roles. He organized a canned food drive for Thanksgiving meals every November to help families in need in the community and exemplified the character of a Bristow teacher, coach, and community leader. The world truly needs more Shannon Hilburns. BPS is honored to have been able to work with him as members of his coaching staff. Please come out on Oct. 16, 2025 for the formal dedication of the track in his name when the Pirates host the Sulphur Bulldogs on Hafer.
