The three of them were out for a brunch closer to dinner than it was to breakfast, in some dingy diner Monica swore was straight out of a movie. Behind them sat a rowdy pair of teenage boys waiting for someone else to arrive, whom exactly, the group could not figure out. They had spent close to the last 30 minutes making witless guesses at who exactly was missing from the scene based on the conversation Charles was able to comprehend between their breathless laughter. Richard, with his naturally pessimistic behavior, had made the point multiple times that whomever it was clearly was not arriving anytime soon, or for that matter, arriving at all. Ironically, he was the first one to guess that they were expecting someone else. His evidence being the glass of water sitting in the center of the table, on the side of the booth opposite them.“There really is no need to speculate about the lives of two random teenagers,”Richard said, monotone.
“Says you, if I recall you pointed it out in the first place,” Monica chides lightheartedly,“so what if Charlie and I like a little storytelling.”
Charles hated it when she called him that but he recognizes that it is simply Monica's efforts to manufacture history between them. She is the kind of girl to dreamily recall the tales of being in her twenties and smile and laugh about her old friend Charles, to her he was Charlie. He lets it go, and instead offers his own opinion, “You really should lighten up Richard, this is why you have two friends-”Before he can finish, Richard cuts him off in his usual fashion.
“Ah yes, the two moths that buzz incessantly around that streetlamp where I take my smoke break,” He laughs and consequently Monica laughs too, Charles following shortly.
She quips back, “Calling us moths is quite rude.”
Soon enough their banter has devolved into a quiet hum of snickering and pointing at each other, while Monica slaps at the table uncontrollably. The boys try and stop her before the hateful waitress comes over to scold them for causing a ruckus.
Their once hot mugs and plates cool, and the conversation does too. These days they spend so much time around each other that they quickly run out of things to talk about .
