As promised last week, here are my thoughts on the Formula One movie. I do apologize if this seems unorganized or hard to understand, but please bear with me. I can admit that I did not have very high hopes for this movie. Hollywood is known for the dramatization of things, and I was fully prepared for that. However, I underestimated Lewis Hamilton’s influence on this movie, as well as the budget. For the most part, it was about as accurate to actual formula racing as it can get. With exceptions for the rolling roadblock plot and weaving across the track, the driving was very accurate. There were details down to a HANS device, which I thought quite highly of. The plot however was a bit Hollywood and this is where a lot of the unrealistic parts came from. For one, the movie had one female character, which they promptly had fall in love with, exacerbating a problem women in sports already face, the idea that they only like sports because of men. But I digress. The main character, Sonny, took to this aggressive driving style that I assume was inspired by the real life rolling road block Kevin Magnussen. I keep saying rolling road block for a reason, it isn’t just a fun nickname. It is a strategy, a pretty controversial one at that, used by certain drivers. They physically impede people using their car, not caring about penalties, to help their teammate out, assuming their own race is already scrapped for some reason. I loved to see this, however, as we see in real life, if you did that in a race the stewards would have you. Despite all of this, it was still a wonderful movie. I don’t see it winning any Oscar’s, but at the very least, it was quite entertaining.
