On the evening of Saturday, June 1, Johnathan Scroggs and Hunter Wilson organized the “Old Fashioned Festival”, which was held at Bristow’s historic St. George’s Episcopal Church on the southeast corner of West 7th Avenue and North Elm Street, where attendees were treated to a hodgepodge of historical experiences and a few modern treats as well.
Upon arrival, many attendees and performers were dressed to impress in clothing styles popular around the turn of the century— from the 19th to the 20th century, that is. Young children to adults in the silvery primes of their lives could be spotted in attire true to the time period. In advance of the festival, Scroggs noted online that awards for those best dressed for the occasion would be presented; however, verification of award winners did not occur by time of print.
Additionally, attendees were to be treated to the “good old fashioned” music stylings of barber shop quartet, cowboy and on-the-range tunes, and gospel hymns. Observers could also view wool being spun into yarn, loom weaving, and leather working, in adherence to historical practices. Carriage rides were available on-site as well.
In regard to available modern treats, vendors were set up, selling wares, a silent auction was held, and food trucks were parked nearby with barbecue and Mexican food available. Local businesses and organizations were said to have donated items for prizes and the silent auction with festival attendees and vendors noting that proceeds benefitted Rainbow Healthcare Community.
Event organizers are said to plan on hosting similar events at the church again in the future.
