Sam Varner Memorial Fireworks Celebration Announced
In preparation for the Sam Varner Memorial Fireworks Celebration, Bristow Police Department recently announced the event date and time and sought donations via its social media accounts. This year, the celebration will be held on July 6 at Lake Massena with family-friendly events and activities and food trucks available throughout the park during the day. The fireworks show will kick off at dark. BPD noted funding for the event remains low to their fundraising goal, which was unstated. BPD stated that donations will go toward the purchase of fireworks, food, and beverages, and aiding logistical assistance efforts. Donations may be made to the Bristow Police Department and Bristow City Hall. Checks must be made payable to City of Bristow with “fireworks” clearly noted on the memo line.
Day Camp Begins Soon
With the opening of the pool, Bristow Day Camp returns after a few years of inactivity. The camp runs for 3 weeks from June 10 to June 28, beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at noon each morning of camp. Youngsters will participate in archery, arts & crafts, fishing, horseback riding, and swimming lessons among other activities throughout the camp.
Area Cleared
The lot immediately east of Bristow Social Services was cleared in the last week. Structures were razed and the wooded area cleared. The resultant brush pile burned over the holiday weekend. Neighbors expressed their belief that social services now owns the lot and will put it to good use in the future.
Never Too Late to Garden
Throughout the weekend as I worked on my own garden areas, I encountered several Bristowans getting late starts to their vegetable and floral gardens. A few were concerned it was too late in season or life to be getting started. Fortunately, gardening can be done year round, inside and out, planted in ground, in containers, or in raised beds. Anyone of any age can learn and get started. Be sure to visit local garden and farm shops, plant nurseries, the OSU Extension Office at the Creek County Fairgrounds, or check out informational videos online to learn more.
Unwelcome Surprise for Cemetery Visitors
Last Saturday as many loved ones stopped by the Bristow City Cemetery, a few were seen stopping mid-stride as a friendly neighborhood polecat meandered across a nearby road. The moment it disappeared behind a headstone, people hurriedly, albeit silently, placed mementos and flowers on graves while keeping a keenly watchful eye. Three snow-capped young ladies giggled at the horror the unwelcome visitor had inflicted upon a nearby family, suggesting it was 'only a sweet lil old polecat'. Sweet? Indeed. He left in peace and graced us all with a breath of fresh air.
