Upon conclusion of the 36th Annual Wildflower Run, several stories emerged of wild fun, mischievous efforts, and renewed excitement in the event.
Speaking with Dr. Chip Cooper, he excitedly thanked so many involved with the Wildflower Run this year. He noted that Oklahoma weather and the Bristow Public Library’s new pocket park known formally as the Bristow Library Courtyard and dedicated to Lucy Mae Mills Dial proved perfect for the occasion. Additionally, Tatur Racing was able to place their computerized racing equipment within 50 feet of the finish line—a marked improvement upon the previous distance of around 150 feet. The park’s stage offered a perfect place to present awards, as well. For those reasons, he wished to thank the Bristow Public Library and Library Board Inc., Lucy Mae Dial, and Tatur Racing.
Dr. Cooper also stated that with the beautiful weather and the race being run in honor of Shannon Hilburn, numerous families and kids came out to run this year. In fact, race participation increased by around 150 to 200 more participants than have joined in about the last 15 years.
When it came to the fun and mischievous activities of participants, two of my favorite stories originated from a dear friend of mine—Carolyn— and “Team Colby” leader Colby Wissell, who lost the sole of his racing flats around the 3K mark.
For her fun on the day, Carolyn had not been feeling well. Her husband did not wish her to race as a result. She agreed, or so it seemed. When he left for a short while, Carolyn decided she could secretly sneak away and enter to participate anyway, and she did! The best part occurred when innocent bystanders outed her to her beloved husband without realizing her participation was secret. He likely would have known anyway because she placed in her age group. Oh, yes! Way to go, Carolyn!
As for Colby, he and opposing “Team Bobby” leader Bobby Lyons are competitive runners. While battling it out along the race, Colby managed to outrun the sole of one of his shoes. Although Bobby beat him by 14 seconds, Dr. Cooper says Colby blames his shoes—a likely scapegoat if ever there was one. What most impressed onlookers and me, however, was his commitment to finish the race without a sole! Take a long soak, Colby. Your sore foot deserves it.
