Community holding fall festival Saturday
The Depew Senior Citizens Center was founded in 1963. Initially the center only provided meals and became a meeting place for the community. They played dominoes, chess, checkers, horseshoes cards and Bingo five days a week on a volunteer basis.
In the early 1980's, the center obtained grants to renovate the existing building and gained permission from the town to build an addition. The original building is now is disrepair and recently part of the kitchen ceiling fell in due to a bad roof. The center discovered that the flat roof was not insured. This has left the center desperatley looking for funding for a new roof. Unfortunately, community support has dwindled in the last few years from a miriad of reasons, Covid-19 restrictions, deaths of community members, and a general apathy. Times have changed yet the center has not changed with them.
The center is inviting and welcoming individuals or groups to play cards and dominoes. If its a puzzle you want to work, the center has dozens to choose from. Working to get the center back up and running again with monthly Bingo nights and once again offering delicious lunches to the surrounding communities.
The Depew Ladies Auxiliary is presenting Depew's Fall Festival on Sept. 30 from 4-9 p.m. to benefit the Depew Fire Dept. There will be live music, a bounce house, horseshoes, dunk tank, food vendors and many other activities.
