Barbara Lynn Herman was born Dec. 19, 1952, to Gerald and Shirley Hill in Wewoka, Oklahoma. She departed this life Sept. 9, 2023, at the age of 70.
Barbara graduated from Wewoka High School in 1971 and then attended Seminole State College for two years before finishing her undergraduate degree at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma. She later received her master’s degree in education from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
Barbara began her teaching career in Bristow in 1975 as a fifth grade teacher at Washington Elementary. She made a huge impact on every student she had in class. Her love for teaching was contagious and her students always adored her.
Barbara taught at every level except high school before retiring in 2016 at Collins Elementary after 41 years as an educator.
Barbara Hill and Tommy Herman were united in marriage on March 17, 1978.
Together they raised three children, Haley, Chad, and Brett.
After retirement Barbara stayed busy shopping, doing vintage crafts, and going to garage sales. Most of all, she loved her grand and greatgrandchildren and enjoyed every minute they spent together.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Tommy Herman; three children, Haley Herman, Chad Herman and wife Katy, and Brett Herman; mother, Shirley Hill; one brother, Darrell Hill and wife Julie; four grandchildren, Kinadey Freeman and husband Austin, Dalaney Alvarez, Karley Alvarez, and Chaps Herman; three great grandchildren, Jetson Freeman, Lawson Freeman, and Archie Freeman and one great granddaughter on the way, Kinsley Veach; niece, Erin and husband Aaron Clark and their daughter, Ivy; nephew, Brian Hill and his wife Beth Ann and their daughter Cedar.
She was preceded in death by her father, one grandson, Cash Herman and one great grandson, Nolan Freeman.
Memorial services are scheduled for 10:30 AM, Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023, at Faith Baptist Church in Slick. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Bristow Education Foundation, The Wewoka First Baptist Church or Faith Baptist Church in Slick, Oklahoma. Services are under the care of Hutchins Maples Matherly Funeral Home.
