OHCE members meet

Bristow OHCE club members, Mrs. Julia Russell and Dr. Joyce Wade Kinslow introduced 'A Place for Herbs' by displaying herbs and reading 'Good Friends are the Spice Our Lives: They Add Flavor To a Day!' Russell began by talking/showing/reading pictures of Mediterranean herbs. Kinslow read/explained/showed how some herbs need sun and some shade. Both Kinslow and Russell showed visualizations. They added/showed how the herbs can be arranged in flowering beds, Russell said that herbs, especially coriander and dill seed, may require very dry and direct sunlight. Russell and Kinslow note that other herbs may need semi-sunlight and some moisture. Both Russell and Kinslow, and also members pointed stressed how some plants need to be kept in pots, to avoid the roots from spreading. Background for presenters Russell and Kinslow include Julia Russell's background as a chef at a private club and a cook for Wal-Mart Corporation. Dr. Joyce Wade Kinslow is a licensed FACS teacher in three states and has been a FACS teacher for middle and high schools. Members received the following handouts: 1)Culinary Herb Garden, 2)Herbal Teas, 3)Oklahoma Gardening. After explaining the culmination set for the information on the 'Chef's guide' handout, a sign -up sheet for the Chefs Guide handout was passed around. President Carolyn Kuykendall will obtain copies via the Creek County Extension.

Bristow OHCE business meeting began with a U.S. pledge, roll call answering what herb was used the most, with garlic being most popular. 'Jane's Household Tips' was a discussion of microfiber for dusting. President Carolyn began their business with: 1) Club theme voted for 'Country Living' fair display theme for booth and next month members are to say what they want to make and enter. For the upcoming Livestock Show, Bristow OHCE is scheduled to work on Thursday 9-11am and Friday 3:30-5:30pm. Members were reminded that registration for the NE District OHCE by March 1, as the meeting is on March 28 in Owasso, Ok.
