Summer is coming to an end and area kids are heading back to school. Bristow Public Schools started its 2022-2023 session this morning. School days bring conjestion. Buses are picking up students, kids are on bikes hurrying to get to school and parents are dropping off students as they go to work. Over the next few months, it is important to remember the rules of the road while school is in session.
If you are a parent, dropping of a child, don't double park blocking the visibility of children and other vehicles. Most schools have specific drop off procedures, make sure for the safety of every child to know what those procedures are.
Always obey school zone speed limits and never pass a bus loading or unloading children. If your child rides his/her bike to school make sure they know the rules. On most roads, bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as a vehicle. The proper thing is to ride your bike on the right side of the road, with traffic, and always in a single file. Always come to a complete stop before crossing a street. It is a better idea to walk your bike across the street. For the children that walk to school, always walk on the sidewalk. If no sidewalk is available, walk facing the traffic.
A few precautions go a long way in keeping children safe. According to the National Safety Council, most of the children who lose their lives in bus related accidents are between the ages of 4 and 7 and they are normally walking.
