Mom had just put Drew into his crib and had walked down the hall to rest a minute before starting laundry. She had just sat down when she heard him crying. “Oh, he is just not sleepy,” she thought. “I’ll give him a moment.” But Drew cried more loudly, so Mom got up and went back to his room. Drew was hanging onto his crib rail, and his feet had slipped out from under him where he had stood on his mattress. He was being supported only by the strength in his tiny hands as he held on while waiting faithfully for his mother to rescue him. His trust in Mom must have given those little hands the strength he needed while waiting.
Discussion: Have you ever felt as if you had no support under you and were just hanging on “by the skin of your teeth?” Did you have something or someone to help you? In what do you trust or hope when you are in distress and feel as if the ground has fallen out from under you? How can you help your children develop trust?
