Monday, Nov 8, 2021, Bristow Public School held their school board meeting in the Chuck West cafeteria. The meeting started off with a few local parents speaking about the books in the school libraries that are inappropriate and not educational. The parents that spoke were given a time limit of three minutes to speak in front of the board. They gave examples of books that are in the libraries at the middle school and high school. Some of the books talk about sex, suicide, drug addiction, rape and have foul language in them. The parents would like these books removed from the libraries or put in a specially marked section where the child must have parental consent, with a signed parental form on file, in order to check out these types of books.
The parents mentioned the rule that states “The superintendent is directed to develop regulations governing the selection of materials for and the use of the library and classroom media centers.” They do not feel that this is being done. The school board thanked the parents for their statements and then continued the rest of the meeting. The school board did not mention a course of action on the books in the libraries that are inappropriate.
