A few months ago, Shannon Hilburn, teacher and coach of Bristow Public Schools, found himself diagnosed with stage four melanoma, an advanced state of the most serious of skin cancers. Melanoma is a very aggressive form of cancer, occurring when problems arise in melanocytes (cells that produce melanin, which give the skin its coloration) and developing often from exposure to sunlight and other light sources emitting ultraviolet radiation. Melanomas can be missed until they reach late stages or metastasize (spread to other areas of the body). By the time Shannon received his diagnosis, his melanoma had reached stage four. Recently, he learned that his cancer is spreading; however, he began treatment quickly, and his hometown of Bristow sprang into action to support him and his family.
In early August, a few community members posted an endearing message in support of Shannon and his family on Facebook, noting that he would be taking time off for treatment and recovery and offering ways members of the public can support the Hilburn family via donations, gifts, and letters of encouragement.
Days later, The Snow Shack also posted in support of Coach Hilburn and his family, raising funds for the family by donating all sale proceeds from August 14th and matching those proceeds dollar for dollar. The business also accepted donations for the Hilburn family via Venmo, PayPal, and Cash App.
During the last week, at least one GoFundMe fundraising campaign in support of the Hilburn family was created by a community member. At the time of writing, a total of $7,910 of a $10,000 goal had been raised—all made possible by donations from the community. The campaign remains open and active for those who wish to donate.
On Sept. 25, the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus will perform at the softball field across from the pool, sponsored by the Bristow Police and Fire Departments. On Sunday, September 12th, The Bristow Police Department announced on Facebook that it will donate its portion of the proceeds to the Hilburn family. Tickets cost between $7 and $15 each, depending on the age of the ticket holder and time of purchase. Advance tickets may be pur chased at Bristow City Hall, Salty Creek Boutique, Kemp’s Drug, SpiritBank, Main Street Market, and the Cowboy Depot.
In addition to donations and fundraisers, the community prays and has been praying for Shannon and his family. Recently, his wife Allison noted encouraging developments in his care, crediting God and expressing gratitude for those very prayers. She asked that the community continue to pray. In response, members of the com munity organized an evening prayer vigil at Hafer track and field for Wednesday, September 15th at 8:15 p.m. Invitations posted on social media and shared by word-of-mouth encouraged the community to attend and support Coach Hilburn and his family.
Finally anyone wishing to donate to or support the family directly with an encouraging letter or card may email or send a donation via PayPal using Allison’s email: lularoeallisonhilburn@gmail.com.
