The Bristow Public Library is offering a new book club: The Whistle Stop Book Club. Drawing from The Paris Reviews Eat Your Words column, the book club will be discussing authors works AND their recipes! Each meeting will coincide with a taste-testing of authors; recipes, but participants are encouraged to bring a sack lunch as well.
Starting with the wellknown Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg, participants will take a tour through American literature. “Our world is increasingly divisive and full of absolutes, so one of the things we aim to do in this book club is to illustrate the broad scope of what ‘American’ or ‘the American Experience’ means to different groups of people," said executive director Heather Hutto. “For instance, the cultural norms of Whistle Stop, Alabama (a fictional town loosely based off of Juliette, Georgia) have similarities and differences when compared to those of places like Bristow, Oklahoma, and those similarities and differences continue to evolve through generations. Various historical, cultural, religious, and generational differences are main themes in each of the books we will discuss,” she said.
Whistle Stop Book Club meets on the following Fridays: April 28, May 26, June 16, June 30, July 14, July 28, August 11, August 25. All participants will receive a collectible recipe card at each session.
