Tulsa County Health Department has confirmed that a test of mosquitoes from a trap, in Tulsa County, has tested positive for West Nile Virus. No cases have yet to be confirmed in the county. The peak season for mosquitoes is from July thru October. West Nile Virus is carried from the bite of an infected mosquito. Symptoms include dizziness, fever, headache and muscle weakness, more or less you would experience mild flu like symptoms. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms after being bitten by mosquitoes, consult your physician.
Some safety tips that can help when you are outside.
• Get rid of standing water in things in your yard. Do not leave water standing in buckets, cans, pots, tires and pool covers. Mosquitoes often breed in these areas.
• Use a bug spray containing DEET or other CDC approved repellents.
• Mosquitoes are more active around dusk or dawn. If at all possible, avoid being outside during this time.
• Wear long sleeves and long pants while you are outside.
• Repair or install window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out.
• Clean leaves and debris from gutters to make sure they aren’t clogged.
