Beginning in May of this year, members of the Bristow Post 3656 Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, VFWA, began selling raffle tickets for a threeday, two-night getaway at Roman Nose State Park near Watonga with $100 cash prize. Members presented the local winner her prize on September 13.
As nonprofit organizations often do, members of the local VFWA began brainstorming fundraising ideas early in the year. They opted to raffle a weekend getaway, choosing Roman Nose State Park, and sold tickets throughout the spring and summer. Members sold tickets during the Wildflower Run and at the Tabouleh Festival in May, at the McNiel Auction in Kellyville, at Fourth of July celebrations at Klingensmith Park and Lake Massena, through a booth at Walmart, and while canvassing local merchants along Main Street.
The winning ticket was drawn by a VFW member’s child during the VFWA’s monthly meeting on the evening of September 5. On the morning of September 13, VFWA Senior Vice President Ruth Jaytanie and Secretary Virginia Ray presented winner Ashley Powell of Farmers Insurance her gift certificate and monetary prize as well as a state tourism guide to park amenities and additional venues of interest within the vicinity of the park.
Secretary Ray noted that Ms. Powell expressed surprise at winning the raffle and pleasure in knowing that her support for the local VFWA had resulted in her winning the weekend getaway and cash prize.
VFWA members are considering holding another getaway raffle again next year. For now, they wish to express their gratitude to all individuals and merchants who purchased tickets in support of their organization as they, in turn, support the VFW and veterans who have fought overseas.
Family members of veterans who fought in overseas conflicts are eligible to join the VFWA. Prospective members interested in joining or learning more about the auxiliary may attend a monthly meeting. Meetings are held at the VFW on the first Tuesday evening of each month, following a dinner. Dinners begin at 6 p.m. and meetings begin at 7 p.m. For more information, Secretary Ray may be reached at (918720-7423.
