Nathan Burgett is with the local Boy Scout Troop 571, when he was thinking of a project for his Eagle Scout, he had approached VFW Post 3656 with a few ideas and some questions on what he could do for the local veterans. One of the recommendations from the VFW members was to paint and change ropes and clips on the flag poles on Veterans Memorial Drive.
Nathan had another idea that he thought would benefit not only the local veterans but also the city of Bristow. He wanted to build a box that could be used to dispose of worn American flags so that they could later be properly retired. Nathan contacted the members of the VFW with a power point display outlining exactly how he wanted to build the drop box, he just needed the approval of the members, which he received. After a couple of months of welding and painting he was ready to find a place at the VFW to place the box, he just wanted to make sure that it would be easy for people to access from their car. Nathan once again spoke to the members of the VFW and asked for suggestions on where to put the drop box, Scot Thompson walked around the grounds with Nathan and his dad George to find a spot that would accommodate those that would use the box. The drop box is located on the south side of the VFW parking lot just at the edge of the grass and there is a light that shines on it at night. This drop box is beneficial to everyone that has an old worn-out flag that needs to be disposed of this will allow the flag to be disposed in a manner that is within the U.S. flag code. We at the VFW are very proud of the work that Nathan Burgett has done for the community, and we encourage everyone to come to the VFW post to see the new drop box, even if you don’t have a flag to deposit.
