Busily at work, the Bristow Garden Club sows and cultivates plans as well as plants. Some of those plans include the beginnings of the club’s annual programs such as “Garden of the Month” in May and the “Garden Tour” in June as well as participation in community events like the Tabouleh Fest.
Beginning in May, club members will view yards and gardens throughout the community and choose one to honor as part of their “Garden of the Month” program. Honorees will be featured in the paper. No applications or entry forms are required to be considered. Alternatively, the club’s “2021 Garden Tour” offers an intentional opportunity to showcase many local gardens.
This year’s garden tour will occur on June 26th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and consists of gardens within the city and surrounding area. Anyone interested in taking the tour must purchase a ticket for $6, which includes a map of participating residential and business locations. A lunch ticket is also available for an additional $4. Lunch will be served at the VFW at 11:30. Additionally, this year’s tour includes an opportunity to view gardens aboard the trolley. No fee is required to ride the trolley, but donations are accepted. The trolley will only be available to view featured gardens within city limits as part of the tour. If interested in showcasing your floral or vegetable garden as part of the tour, please contact Ruth Jaytanie at 918-497-6396.
The Bristow Garden Club meets at the VFW on the second Thursday of each month at 1:30. At their most recent meeting on April 8th, club members elected officers for the coming year: Fran Keller as president, Virginia Ray as vice president, Kathy Costner as treasurer, and Nancy Findlay as secretary. Members also discussed each of the aforementioned programs as well as plans for their Tabouleh Fest booth.
Club members plan to host a booth at the Tabouleh Fest, offering information about the club and gardening as well as selling plants, crafts, and tickets for their garden tour to raise funds for their projects. Speaking of the crafts, the club will hold a craft day gathering on April 22 at 10 a.m. at the VFW to create some of the items for sale at the Tabouleh Fest. Craft day will also be an opportunity for some friendly creativity and laughter among members.
While members look forward to gardening and club projects, they also enjoy a relaxed bit of fun at meetings. They hold potluck luncheons before monthly meetings every other month and run meetings in a casual way that allows members to enjoy friendship and laughter amongst one another. Members visit gardens and nurseries in the area, make shopping trips for gardening supplies, and delight in learning together. At the end of the meeting, a couple of the members present a fun, interesting topic related to nature and gardening, coordinating a snack for club members related to the presentation in some way. Most recently, members Ruth and Fern provided a program on Johnny Appleseed by reading a storybook and offering apple cake and juice for the snack.
