What is art to you? Is it a piece of paper? It's so much more. Let's look into art and find out what art is, why it's important, and what is happening in our art community today.

Why is art important? Art is important because it brings beauty to the world. Art is not just a piece of paper, it expresses who you are and what makes you happy. In A Child's Introduction to Art it says “Art is more than fun and decorations. Art is a way to express yourself. You can tell a story.”

What do you need to make art? Art is simple. You may want to make something as classic as the Mona Lisa or as simple as a flower. Art tools range from pencils, which you can use many, to pastels, crayons, or paints. You can make it on paper, wood, glass or even metal. You can really use anything to make art. Think of your favorite tree in your neighborhood. Mine is one that puts out beautiful white flowers. This where big brush strokes would be used for the trunk and you can make soft swooshing lines for the leaves. All you need to do is imagine and do it! You could create a dirt road and use a toy car for 3-D art! What my point is is that you can make anything with an imagination and a little love for art.

What is happening in our art community today? Some modern day artists are at your County Fair and local Farmers Markets. Many children are artists. We had forty-six entries in my first Art Show and Contest. We displayed all of the entries in the Main Conference room of the Bristow Library and the top three in each age group could win CASH. Anyone could enter from age 0 to 18 years old. My Art Show was themed “What's So Great About Bristow?” and entries had to be related to what the kids love about Bristow! I love local companies like Buffalo Beverage Company, the Toy Museum, Community Bank, Witty Ideas and Whispering Grit. I also like nice people here like Melissa Holderby and Mayor Kris Wyatt, Mrs. Trigalet, the librarians and kids like YOU! Some of the places I like are the Chrysler Tower, the Depot and Caboose, and the Library. I love the flowers and murals around town, specifically the big fancy one on the tattoo shop by Subway, plus City Hall, the Police Station, and the Fire Department!

Now you know a little more about art, why it's important, and what's going on in our community. You can do so much more with art in your life! Now come and celebrate what's great about Bristow and our art community! Let's make some art!

Congratulations to our winners of the Junior division: Jagger Booth, Enoch Greco, and Abigail Smith. Our senior division winners are Micah Greco and Hadassah Greco. Our judges were impressed with so many entries that they asked to give an overall BEST IN SHOW and that award went to Gauge Kennedy. The judges each chose a piece that they wanted recognized and those Honorable Mention awards, who won a free month of art classes from the Bristow Creative Arts Center are; Norah Coots, Georgia Parrick, and Theoderick Reid.

I loved planning this art show. It was so beautiful and colorful! I learned how to plan an event, how to use Canva, and how to ask for something like our prize money, gifts, an event space, and yard signs.

I am so thankful for the help from the community and local sponsors. Let's do it again next year!
