The black-and-white photo shows a little girl and a boy facing each other. The little girl is leaning away after just kissing his cheek. The boy’s facial expression shows utter surprise. They were only two years old! They never became more than just friends, never kissing again.
Seeing old photos helps us relive precious memories. You smile. You laugh. Some are gone, and those brief moments are past. You sometimes cry.
Do you think about holding someone’s hand, or hugging them just once more? What about you?
Life has a way of twisting and turning, zigging and zagging. We’re forced to move on. Change isn’t comfortable, but nothing here will continue forever. The Bible teaches that your life is only tempoary: “The rich person is to glory in his humiliation, because like flowering grass he will pass away. For the…flower falls off and the abeauty of its appearance is destroyed; so also the rich person, in the midst of his pursuits, will die out” ( James 1:9-10).
James presents these two paths in life. One path sets the heart on material wealth, the things of this world. This is self-deception, and cannot satisfy (please also read Jeremiah 17:9-10). The poor man trusts God throughout life. One gains only emptiness, while the other has an eternal reward.
Jesus puts it this way: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:19-21). Trust God!
Jesus further teaches, “For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is life not more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the sky, that they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather crops into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more important than they? Do not worry then, saying, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear…’ for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided to you. So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:25-26, 31-34).
This life can be so uncertain. Jesus promises eternal life in heaven to those who put their trust in Him and follow Him.
